@poornabell: When I interviewed women in their 40s and 50s and older for a book I wrote called She Wanted More (I’m 45) - the things they listed were - their partner’s willingness to talk things through, to be able to communicate how they actually felt not cos-playing niceness and understanding, to genuinely understand how to cheerlead and support, to respect their time, to have their own friends and hobbies, to be committed to personal growth, to understand they were part of a team, to engage in therapy if childhood issues were impacting them, to see them as a person, to support their joy. AND they had evidence of things changing around domestic labour, and gender roles. #shewantedmore #datingadviceforwomen #relationshipadviceforwomen #relationshipadvice #modernwomen

I know social media has its faults but we are so lucky to be living in a time when women of all ages can communicate honestly with eachother. Being able to hear many honest life experiences and learn varying realities is a blessing women have never had at this breadth and depth before, thank you for sharing ♥️

This is why I think it’s so important to befriend women 10-30 years older than you. I’ve learnt so much from older women and their shared wisdom makes me feel confident in my future.

High self esteem (not performative ego) is such an underrated golden nugget in a partner. It means every action comes from genuine choice, not desperation, ego, manipulation, performance. It’s a stable beautiful place to be loved from. Being loved by someone who actually likes who they are is the only way to go.

The bar is in hell. The only way we can raise the bar is by women collectively agreeing that we will all hold men to high standards.

Also relationships change over time, have you chosen someone who is open to change? Not just physical, but emotional, financial, mental.

Yes I’m excited for my girl to grow into a very confident 40 year old woman in 20 years, she is back bone of our family holding the house down and raising the kids whilst I work

the biggest marker of a lasting partnership is being able to problem solve together and negotiate a better dynamic when things are not working. end of story, nothing else is permanent

For the first 7 years of marriage, we were childless and lived a parallel life happily. He was so proud of me being such an independent woman. After kids came along, I was still raising 2 kids + 1 man child independently, without help. I am now happily divorced and will NEVER get married again !!

"he has his money I have my money" that's good unless you have kids and watch your money and career drain away and he thrives financially. you'll never catch up

As someone who had the self esteem of a kumquat in my 20s, i can (to some extent) understand why my partner continued to be who he was to me. I’m sure there were times where i disgusted him bc i was so willing to lay down and die in order for him to stay. It’s not attractive in either realm 😩😂

I think younger women lead with their hearts too much. We need to think logically and clearly whilst deciding on a partner. We need to plan ahead and ensure we put our needs first

THANK YOU. I feel like I'm going insane when I tell my friends statistics about domestic labour imbalance (mind you, I am not specifically talking about THEIR partners) they will still use it as an opportunity to pivot to "Well MY partner does..." and then list the most basic requirement of a human being

what I will say is that the younger men (under 30) were majority raised by working mothers and in a far more feminist culture and the ones I've seen do make a better effort at equal partnership. Those older, even in their early 30's the woman is still doing the majority of the household work

Someone made an interesting point: men often weren’t intentionally taught how to be good partners or husbands, while girls are socialised from a young age to prepare for marriage and to care for others. They’re taught to nurture, compromise, cook, clean, and constantly consider the needs of a future partner.
But it raises an important question - who prepares men to show up in the same way? And more importantly, who teaches women that they, too, deserve to be cared for? Who helps the woman?

I was searching for this constantly in my 20's & 30's & eventually ended up telling myself that it doesn't exist because I could not find a single guy that met those needs. I was also being told by friends that "this is just how it is". I was never happy. Now 42, met the guy who is the baseline for me, what I've been looking for since I was in my 20's, it exists but he agrees he wasn't this person in his 20's, it took him til he was mid-40's to get to this person himself.

Long term relationships are about compatibility and similarities, not just “enjoying life” and doing anything and everything to “have fun”😂😂 never mind the domestic labor, emotional labor required in every serious relationship

Esp true when dating after 40. There's a good chance your partner has an ex & kids. Pay attn to how they navigate those relationships, even if they are good to you. Are they respectful of their ex's time? Do they lie to or manipulate their ex/kids? Do they constantly justify their behavior? How do they speak about their ex/kids when they're not around? Are they truly as involved in parenting as they claim to be?
