I do not quite agree with you. A state like Iran cannot afford to hold back indefinitely. Restraint without limits is not dignity; it is weakness, and it invites aggression. Deterrence only works if it is demonstrated from time to time. That does not mean constant escalation. It means that every so often, Iran must bare its teeth and remind its enemies, through decisive missile strikes, that there is a real price for crossing it. Measured shows of force are what keep larger wars at bay. Some will object that shows of force provoke escalation. But that objection misses the point. When an aggressor, a bully, has decided to pick a fight with you, escalation is unavoidable anyway. If he cannot beat you in the first round, he will escalate regardless, simply to avoid losing face. Appeasement does not prevent this; it only hands him the initiative. The bully only begins to reconsider once he grows exhausted, once the costs pile up and he realizes that he is heading for defeat. Only then, in order to save face, will he look for a way to back down. That is precisely why measured, decisive strikes matter: they drive up the costs and bring that moment closer.
