I’m all for integration as long as there is support. Because my daughter was evacuated from her kindergarten classroom due to a violent autistic child multiple times. How is that fair to her? It’s not. And her education matters too

As a parent of an autistic child, full-time inclusion doesn't work. It impacts every child in the class, not just the child with autism. Should they have exposure in a regular classroom setting? Yes. Just not all day, everyday.

As someone who has taught special ed for 13 years this is 100% WRONG! The kids in my special needs classroom learn and talk just like gen Ed kids.

What about the other kids in the class? Nobody ever thinks about that. Think about if your child was asked every day to help Johnny, Susie or whoever because they have a disability to make them become bette. When does that child get additional instruction to become better?

She’s saying this because she’s not there to actually witness the day ins and day out it just sounds well in theory but no this is not a good fit for all kids with disabilities.

I’m all for inclusion! Absolutely love this! But with that being said, you also want your children to hear educational content on THEIR level and work up to more because if not, they won’t ever grow to age appreciate standards. For example, you have a 5th grader on a 1st grade reading level. You want to include them as much as possible on 5th grade curriculum (OF COURSE- INCLUSION!) but you also want them to be able to work on those 1st grade skills to be able to move up to 2nd and on and on. I’m going on my 3rd year in special education and I love when my kiddos are able to join class with their peers. But i also feel that they should be pulled getting help they need!

Disagree… my nephew with Down Syndrome was in a life skills class where he was taught to read a bus map, make change, cook simple meals. Another kid like him was sitting through regular classes learning about the war of 1812. Now my nephew has a job and lives on his own ( with supervision ). Having classes tailored to their needs teaches them the skills they need.

Until it disrupts the other children’s learning on a daily basis. I love inclusion, I think it’s so important. I also think that one kids behavior should not limit the rest of the class’ learning daily.

as a teacher....if I dont have support I am spending all day managing autistic behavior and not teaching the other kids... so unfortunately I disagree because....we dont have support so the whole class sufferers because I'm making sure the autistic kid doesn't get hurt 😕

As a sped teacher, this doesn’t always work. A lot of my students mainstream into a Gen Ed, but it’s also my job to facilitate the students talking to each other. I think Laura gets a lot wrong on Autism and disabilities. Studies are actually showing integration does more harm than good. I just got a student from Los Angeles who were in one of these classes she’s speaking of and Ong this little guy. The anxiety he has from being with those neurotypical students. It’s so overwhelming for a lot of these special needs students.

I have a child with ASD. I think integration is great as long as it’s not at the detriment of the other kids learning. It needs to be fully supported so teachers can still teach.

Support is pivotal. I see kids “integrated” into Gen ed but don’t have the support they need and really struggle.
