Nolan is a very technically skilled director, but he fails as a writer pretty consistently, especially when his brother isn't writing with him. rewatching inception recent really highlighted this issue for me. He's not at all interested in interacting with this world.or characters hes created, they're just set dressing for his damaged genius in Cobb to absolve his guilt over killing his wife.

YES. Cutting his affairs with women during his journey (completely out with Circe/making him an unwitting participant with Calypso) makes it easier for Nolan to push his version of Odysseus and his “romanticized greatness” BUT removes interest in the complication of who he is…making the moving much more boring

Did think it was a bit funny that this is the second Nolan film in a row that’s like “I’m such a clever little guy, I’m such a genius, but I even I couldn’t foresee that creating the war crime machine 3000 would result in war crimes 😔.” Will say I think the odyssey pulls this off better than Oppenheimer

Odysseus is the worst man for him to write, I’ll be honest. He should have chosen a different take on the odyssey- maybe the point of view of a man from odysseus’ crew who actually feels guilty! Odysseus is a slimy man, who played mad to try and avoid the war, destroyed cities and took slaves without any remorse, he tricked, he didn’t play fair. He used his charms against others while maintaining the rules of their society. It’s UGH. So not Nolan’s type of character.

This honestly perfectly encapsulates my issues with Nolan Odyssey’s attempts at a war commentary. On one hand, the movie wants you to condemn what Odysseus and his comrades did in Troy, but at the same time, Chris still REALLY needs you to root for his main characters, regardless of what they’ve done 🫠

And then he proceeds to neglect the women of the story. Yet they are just as important to the story to show how Odysseus has become that barbarian, a monster, via contrast and showing how other people became barbaric for what they thought and in many cases were good causes.

Zendaya’s character feels like the embodiment of that. She’s supposed to represent the guilt of what happened in Troy personified in one of its victims all the while, during the entirety of the movie, feeling almost like a cute companion dog who helps him feel less bad about committing a g***ocide

He all but removed Odysseus's canonical hubris in order to make him another brooding and sympathetic man of regret. It was a terrible adaptation, though it's almost impressive how he managed to make a thrilling story that has survived millennia into something profoundly dull and boring.
