funny thing is, I once read that in Japan in 1960s, during the best industrialization period, workers applying for a job had to provide surnames of their parents and grandparents. unofficially giving away their 'caste' (though Japan didn't officially have caste). like, its a more widespread thing in E Asia.

I’ve seen this with my own eyes in corporate American lmao. My analyst was a Brahmin and my VP wasn’t and seeing the VP beat around the bush to not offend the analyst for making a mistake was insane

Several of my Indian coworkers only use the first initial of their last name. I work in IT so set up emails/other credentials frequently, and was very confused why so many people had usernames like “rahul.b” and in our system their last name field was literally just “b.” I asked someone finally and learned that some choose to do this so people can’t tell what caste their from by their last name
