Unpopular opinion: this shouldn’t be a movie. It will do more harm than good. Many women like myself can find comfort or healing in reading stories like this, but giving it a movie adaptation and trying to fit all of the details and understanding into two or 2 1/2 hours is nearly impossible. It’s going to romanticize sexual assault and give men reason to believe that no doesn’t actually mean no. We recently saw the negative effects that the movie obsession had on sexual assault and consent, this could do so much worse. Don’t get me wrong, this is one of my favorite books that I’ve ever read, but I’m worried that it will cause us to take steps backwards rather than forward in the conversation surrounding sexual assault and consent.
