My own deconversion journey as catholic priest accelerated when I re-read two Church council documents from Vatican II (written in the 1960s): one that said we a moral obligation to seek the truth in matters of faith (a good advice actually, but one that ironically led me away from the faith)... And the other document was rereading the dogmatic constitution on divine revelation Dei Verbum #11: "Holy mother Church, relying on the belief of the Apostles (see John 20:31; 2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-20, 3:15-16), holds that the books of both the Old and New Testaments ***in their entirety, with all their parts***, are sacred and canonical because ***written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author*** and have been handed on as such to the Church herself.(1) In composing the sacred books, God chose men and while employed by Him (2) they made use of their powers and abilities, so that with Him acting in them and through them, (3) they, as true authors, consigned to writing everything and ***only those things which He wanted***." (Dei Verbum, available on vatican dot va). So God -- for some reason -- really wanted these stories in there, and also the psalm that says to smash children againt rocks, and all the other problematic passages, including this story about Lot and his daughters...

Wow, I forgot about that story. We learned that in Bible school and looking back now, oh my God why were we teaching children this stuff? Let’s just focus on what Jesus said to do unto others as you would have others doing to you. If we follow that one simple principle the world will be a better place. Forget about the rest. It’s a bunch of nonsense.

It’s got problems. I think if we had approached the Bible as a collection of fictional stories I think the entire world would be better off and I think Christians would be better people, myself included.
