Keep it honest but age appropriate. In our family we do not see them because its healthier that way. Not every adult is able to be the version you need in your life. Always reassure them that it is not their fault. Its a hard one. I guess under 6 i would keep it to best for us to stay happy and healthy & older would be more detail. My eldest is 14 so for him he would know the basic outlined truth without any harshness depending the situation.
