@thebridgeprep: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SAFETY VALVE AND A RELIEF VALVE? QUICK OVERVIEW: Both protect equipment from overpressure, but they work differently. 1. SAFETY VALVE - Opens FULLY and SUDDENLY at set pressure - Used for COMPRESSIBLE FLUIDS: Steam, Air, Gas - Example: Boiler safety valve, Air compressor receiver - "POP" action. Closes quickly once pressure drops. 2. RELIEF VALVE - Opens GRADUALLY proportional to pressure increase - Used for INCOMPRESSIBLE FLUIDS: Water, Oil, Liquid - Example: Fuel oil pump discharge, L.O. pump - Prevents pressure from rising further.
