A documentary producer who worked with a detective on a documentary about the murders of Tupac Shakur and Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace testified on Monday that he doesn't believe the detective stole the file. Michael Dorsey was answering questions from Duane "Keffe D" Davis' lawyer Michael Sanft about Greg Kading, the retired Los Angeles police detective whose "Murder Rap" memoir inspired Dorsey's 2015 documentary "Murder Rap: Inside the Biggie and Tupac Murders. "Kading was part of a task force formed in 2006 to investigate Wallace's 1997 fatal shooting in Los Angeles. Federal prosecutors charged Davis with cocaine trafficking and secured a proffer interview with him in 2008 in which he denied involvement in Wallace's murder but discussed his involvement in Shakur's 1996 shooting in Los Angeles. Dorsey used some of the recorded interview in his documentary, and Kading gave him files from the police investigation. "It's not just his files. In fact, the majority of them are from detectives that came before him, including Las Vegas police files," Dorsey testified on Monday (August 24, day 6). "What detectives are you talking about before Greg Kading?" Sanft asked. "Sure. A lot of the Biggie detectives had gathered evidence," Dorsey said before telling Sanft, "Don't shake your head. ... Jeez man." "A lot of Biggie detectives had gathered evidence that pertained to the Tupac case because the two cases it became known or believed were connected. So they had informants coming forward to them on the Biggie case that were saying, 'Hey, these two things are connected,'" Sanft asked. Dorsey protested when Sanft said Kading "steals the Tupac file." "I take issue with the word steal. Any detective can take case files with them when they leave the department. It happens all the time. It's extremely common. In fact, I just did a series on Ted Bundy last year, based on the same exact thing. One of the lead detectives on the Bundy case in the 70s took a box of files with him, and we were able to obtain those files, and we made a show about Ted Bundy based on his files," Dorsey said. #law #crime #court
