Okay so, i know the takes on this edit may seem controversial and all because of the widespread belief for some reason that Goku is a terribly written character which is simply just not the case… I do admit that dragon ball super really did a number on his character consistency, intelligence and all but the core principles of his character are still intact, so if you wish to take the goku in this edit as purely his Z version then that’s perfectly fine. Now moving on to my analysis on the character. when you really look at Goku, it all comes down to one thing… he’s a guy completely defined by his contradictions He is at the same time a protector and a battle addict, compassionate and ruthless, selfless and selfish, innocent and wise, human in his values yet Saiyan in his instincts. Rather than resolving these contradictions, Dragon Ball Z embraces them making them the foundation of his character and i really believe the way it’s executed was beautifully done. His greatest “hypocrisy” lies in the conflict between his desire to protect life and his love of combat. He repeatedly risks the safety of others by sparing enemies like Vegeta(this was done so much better in the manga btw… dialogue wise) and Frieza or seeking stronger opponents, yet these decisions come from a genuine belief in growth, second chances, and pushing limits. His morality isn’t based on justice or punishment it’s based on the potential of who he’s exercising his morality on. The Namek arc solidifies this complexity. In his speech to Frieza, Goku declares himself “the hope of the universe,” embodying the hopes of everyone Frieza oppressed. And thennn moments later, he offers Frieza enough energy to escape. Even at the height of his righteous anger, his compassion was stringer than his vengeance. He becomes the legendary Super Saiyan through Saiyan rage but uses that power according to the values he learned on Earth symbolizing the constant battle between his subconscious heritage and his conscious humanity. When you really get down to it, Goku is all about freedom. He couldn’t care less about power, status, or being in charge. He just wants to live life his own way. He fights because he loves pushing his own limits, not because he’s looking for some kind of glory. But at the same time… that need for freedom ends up putting the world at risk a lot making him both their biggest protector and sometimes their biggest threat. To round this up, Goku’s depth doesn’t come from internal monologues or psychological breakdowns. It comes from the unresolved tensions within him between duty and pure desire, the most selfish selfless character in fiction. These contradictions make him a character who cannot be reduced to either “pure hero” or “selfish fighter.” He is both, and that enduring paradox is what gives him lasting complexity in my opinion. So no he’s not a bad written character, and i wish that agenda stops being passed around, the characters i have higher than him in the whole writing department earned that spot as well in my book and i have a whole thesis on them too which you and I do not have the time for rn, if they were as enjoyable and influential to me as goku is combined with being better written then they would be higher in my personal character ranking, thanks for reading allat, love you guys ☺️ #goku#dragonball#dragonballz#edit#fyp
