As a surgeon, I am always extremely upset if there is a complication. My entire team is upset by these events. We discuss what happened, how did it happen, how could we have changed the outcome. We take these events very very seriously. We are human. We love what we do and we love people. We want patients to succeed and thieve. We do not brush off complications like they are insignificant.

The longer I work in medicine the more I realize that we are all just people and even though we are trained and educated, at the end of the day when you are the person who’s responsible for someone else’s life, it affects you.

I’ve attended thousands of c-sections, and I think “there is a zero percent chance I would have the confidence to cut someone open” every time. Bad things sometimes happen, and that sucks for the patient, but I cannot imagine the stress that responsibility over a patient’s life could cause.

I’m a bedside surg-onc RN. We had a post-whipple patient suddenly die the day before DC. We were all stunned. The surgeon had a whipple the next day and rescheduled it until after the weekend. The other patient just hung out with us on the unit for a few extra days. I was impressed the hospital gave him that latitude.

I see your point. But I sure wish that surgeons could & would admit their mistakes to the patient & genuinely apologize instead of trying to cover it up & gaslight the patient. I’ve had FOUR surgeons (all different surgeries) make significant mistakes which dramatically affected my life permanently & not one of them apologized to me. It makes it very hard to forgive them. It’s disgusting.

And the patient should be paid for being the primary victim. And good surgeons tell their insurance carrier to settle their cases and pay the people the money. But an awful lot of surgeons tell them to fight to the last minute.

I have two I still think about regularly, and I changed careers 5 years ago. Both needed a procedure, but nothing indicated we needed to do it urgently in the ER. They ended up rapidly decompensating without warning, and everyone involved has always wondered if doing the procedure early would've saved them. Both families thanked us and said they didn't blame us, and it still tears me up.

Mine just tell me nothing is wrong and to just go away. They tell me I’m making it up. They don’t use those words, but that’s what they say. A fourth year resident F’ed me up and all involved get to live their lives without the pain I have to feel everyday.

Just because a surgical complication occurs does not mean that a patient needs to be paid or win a lawsuit. Complications happen every day and usually are not due to negligence

I once said, “OMG,” very loud in the OR because we had to switch to an open surgery. The PA got mad I said it, but had I not said it he would have not locked in, we needed him to lock in, so yeah

If the hospitals had better malpractice insurance payouts/systems/laws without having to spend a pretty penny on malpractice attorneys I would feel for them more. But since the patient/families often need millions in medical care to pay for surgeons mistakes, people lake empathy for costly mistakes.
