Hank Williams Jr. has stated he is not a member of the Grand Ole Opry and never will be. His reasoning is twofold: he holds no animosity toward the venue for firing his father, Hank Williams Sr., but he also grew up listening to R&B radio instead of the Opry and never developed the desire to join….. The complicated relationship stems from 1952, when the Opry dismissed Hank Sr. due to habitual drunkenness and missed performances. Tragically, Hank Sr. passed away just months later, and the Opry has never officially reinstated him as a member, despite multiple petitions from fans and family members……When discussing the institution, Hank Jr. has made it clear that while he has no ill will over his father's firing, being an official cast member was simply never a priority for him. He noted that as a child, he preferred tuning into the WLAC rhythm-and-blues radio station over traditional country programming….. Even though he isn't an official member, he occasionally takes the iconic stage. For example, he made a notable appearance on February 16, 2002, to honor his friend and fellow outlaw country legend Waylon Jennings…..HE NEVER WILL BE…..

I would contend that “Country Boy Can Survive “ is maybe the greatest country song ever written. It’s one of one. There was NOTHING like it before and hasn’t been anything like it since. And NOBODY but Hank Jr could have pulled it off with that level of sincerity and authenticity.
