@explainingourpast: Old Alton Bridge in Denton County, Texas, is better known as Goatman’s Bridge—one of the state’s most famous haunted landmarks. Built in 1884 over Hickory Creek, the historic iron bridge once carried travelers along the main road between Denton and Dallas. Local legend says goat farmer Oscar Washburn was killed there during the 1930s and that his spirit still haunts the creek, although historians have not verified the full story. Today, the bridge is open only to pedestrians and horseback riders. Would you cross Goatman’s Bridge after dark? That’s one version of the legend. I focused on the documented history because there’s no historical evidence confirming any version of the story.
