I don’t know about Spanish football for the youth, but as an American, it’s because it’s pay to play here. American capitalism has priced out everyone from casually just playing in a league or a club. It’s awful.

Soccer to other countries is what Baseball is in the US. Every county / district has a little league that is cheap to join and plays on tax payer maintained fields. The kids who like it and are good enough to keep going don’t have to play travel ball to get noticed. They can play in middle school and high school. Then there isn’t just the MLB. Baseball has a robust development system no other sports league in the US has (the minors). It’s also engrained culturally. Every kid grows up playing baseball even if they never play past elementary school.

The coaches they have in their development system have all actually played the game at a high competitive level. That makes a world of a difference. Majority of the coaches we have in the USA development system played soccer at a recreational level.

I love how Americans are so confused about other countries being great at football. It’s their most popular sport but a WIDE margin. It’s your 5th or 6th most popular sport. That matters.

Vision, game IQ, touch on the ball, understanding of the game…this is it! Whatever it takes for the US to start prioritizing this stuff at a young age, it will make all the difference in the world! Let’s forget the speed, size, power, athleticism obsession…all that stuff it’s important too but without decision making, understanding of the game, touch, etc, athleticism is nothing.
