I like fun conspiracy theories, like for example corn is a sentient alien plant that is trying to take over humanity.. we put corn in everything us & our animals eat & drink, BUT it’s just a fun thought experiment. I can go look up & learn how we selectively bred certain varieties of corn to have higher sugar content & how it’s just either easier or cheaper or more efficient or grows better than sugar cane in most of the US, whatever.. but it’s just a theory.. I don’t know if this is necessarily the same, but my dad can’t understand peanut allergies. He will bring it up sometimes. Most recently we were buying supplies for my sister’s classroom (5th grade teacher). She had to remind him not to grab peanut items. He went on a spiel about how no one had peanut allergies when he was growing up. When I tried to argue that maybe those children were homeschooled, he said he never knew anyone who was homeschooled and that was also rare when he was a child. Thankfully he knows not to give anyone anything they are allergic to, but he firmly believes people wouldn’t be allergic to things if they were exposed more to said thing as children. No matter how many times I’ve explained allergies to him… even sent educational videos I thought he would understand. But it’s stuck in his brain I guess.

People in my area say “well I don’t know about that” every time they’re presented with new information. Essentially they insinuate that if it’s not in their mental library, it’s a lie.

Helen Keller was a Paul Bunnion. She didn't do half the stuff the myth claims. She was there. She didn't do it. Touching the controls of a plane when someone else was actually flying it for example. Also, blind and deaf are not on or off. She could see poorly and hear very poorly. Her family didn't let her wear glasses so they could exploit her and make money. OP has a good point, video is a poor example for her point but a great example of critical thinking.

It’s amazing what isn’t taught in grade school anymore. I went to school in the 70s and we learned age appropriate versions of logical fallacies and the precepts of critical thought.

It's often the same people who believe in a man who was killed on a cross and put in a hole in a mountain closed by a giant boulder and rose from the dead again. I don't understand that! So it must not have happened.
