Speedius Maximus : Speedius Maximus (97–138 AD) was a Roman general, famous for his rapid campaigns and lightning victories in the Caucasus. Biography : The birth date of Speedius Maximus is unknown, however, it is known that he was born in 97 AD in sub-Saharan Africa. He joined an influent band of raiders before being captured in 112 AD by the Legio III Augusta in the actual Algeria, at the age of 15, at which point he was enslaved and transported to Rome. Speedius Maximus fame began when he became a gladiator, winning 50 gladiatorial combats without ever being defeated, he was noticed for his exceptional strength and courage. Undefeated, he will be freed and recruited into the Roman army, he quickly rose through the ranks thanks to his tactical skill and discipline, who will lead him to the status of centurio (centurie commander). However, the fact that he was not of any aristocratic lineage, an had no political carrier stopped his rise. This until 116, when Speedius Maximus participated in Trajan's Parthian wars. With the legion he was part of finding itself divided and disorganized, he took control of the situation, restored communication between centuries and greatly guaranteed the capture of Ctesiphon, the Parthian capital. Because of these exploits he received the favor of the emperor Trajan, who made him the Legatus legionis (legion commander) of the Legio XV Appollinaris. Hadrian, Trajan's successor, was interested in extending the conquest of the Caucasus, which served clearly defined purposes: controlling the Caucasian passes, a veritable natural stronghold, to stabilize the border against Alan and Sarmatian incursions; securing the trans-Caspian trade routes that supplied Rome with silk and oriental goods; and encircling the Parthian kingdom by securing control of its northern flank. The gradual annexation of the Black Sea region also allowed for the integration of an already partially Romanized area, while simultaneously exploiting its metal resources, strategic forests, and cavalry networks. This eastern policy could gave the Empire a more coherent border and significantly improved the region's military stability. In the year 126, Hadrian mobilized several legions to prepare for the campaign. However, when it began, the commanding legion quickly became lost in the mountains; once again, Speedius Maximus took control and led the campaign himself. On the year 126 at the age of 29, in 14 days he will take total control of the Caucasus, this event will be called later Bellum Quattuordecim Dierum (14 days war). This feat was greatly amplified by the fact that the Caucasus mountains are difficult for an army to traverse. The Battle of the Steppes of Derbent marked the culmination of this campaign, he inflicted a crushing defeat on the coalition of Alans, Sarmatians and Scythians, definitively securing strategic routes and sealing Roman supremacy over the entire region. After that he pursued more campaigns and quickly gained new titles : - Legatus Augusti pro praetore Governor of the imperial province of Caucasus, responsible of multiple legions, from the year 126. -Dux limitis Responsible for the borders of the Balkans, the Caucasus, from the year 127. By 138 AD, Speedius Maximus had reached the pinnacle of his military career, commanding multiple legions and securing Roman dominance over the Caucasus. After the death of Emperor Hadrian in 138 AD, whispers spread that he intended to claim the imperial throne, a notion deeply threatening to the Senate and Rome’s aristocracy. His origins and former status as a slave made this ambition intolerable to the elite. In 138 AD, at the age of 41, Speedius Maximus was betrayed and assassinated, struck down not by enemies on the battlefield but by the intrigues of Roman politics. #speed #ishowspeed #speedusmaximus #historytok #rome
