@madii.vogel: anyways! maybe don’t ask people questions about their medical equipment in public lol #chronicillnessawareness #chronicillness #invisibleillness #heartdisease #invisibledisabilities
I’ve been a cardiac patient since my teens. I’m now in my mid 40s. It’s never been young people who act this way. It’s always nosey elders saying that I’m too young to have a heart condition, even though I was born with one. I started chasing them off by saying, “That is incredibly offensive” or asking them embarrassing medical questions like “When was your last bowel movement” or “What medications are you currently on?” When they huff at that I say something like, “Oh, I thought we were taking turns asking inappropriate questions? Isn’t that why you started?” As a southerner, it’s hard to be rude to my elders, but it’s also necessary to teach them that this behavior isn’t okay.

One of the hardest parts about dysautonomia I would argue is the old people who can’t fathom the idea that a young “healthy” looking person could have something wrong with them. Because the person is “too young” to have something wrong with them it’s like they have to ask 80 billion follow up questions to prove to themselves that it’s real.

"I don't share my private medical information with strangers". Repeat this phrase to yourself repeatedly, practice it, that way when you need it you will have it at your disposal and feel more prepared for next time. It is genuinely so helpful for me as I often struggle to speak up for myself, especially in moments of conflict.

Discussion needs to be had with your boyfriend: he needs to make sure if you're having issues in public to just keep it short and sweet. If youre comfy with it: "she has a medical condition. please give us space." or something along those lines. he needs to be running offensive for you.

Mind your business is a phrase your boyfriend should say when this happens to you. He's obviously your voice when things like this happen and you're not able to see straight let alone speak. People have the utmost audacity I swear.

Friend, I'm a Medical Provider with dysautonomia & going through chemo; if I may offer my strategy for dealing with these people? Those who have no problem being rude to me don't deserve the kindness of my grace & education so I tell them "I'm having a medical emergency- GO AWAY!" That's it, we owe them no niceties or kindness. I hope next time is easier for you ❤️

"Nosey"=harassing. We need to start treating it as such. If anyone sees someone doing this to a person managing their disability STEP IN AND REMOVE THEM.

When i was first diagnosed (over a decade ago) I was in the grocery store for soup. I was fighting for my life with pre-syncope I kept squatting and doing random things to keep my BP up. Two old ladies followed me and started loudly talking about the "druggies" coming out to our small town. I yelled at them that they need to shut up because I have a heart problem. They were so embarrassed they abandoned their carts.
Moral of the story- embarrass them back.

That is incredibly inappropriate. If she was innocently concerned she could have politely asked if you were okay and moved on. Clearly you’re going a great job managing it ❤️people who think they are entitled to explanations for things that don’t involved them in the slightest is the oddest thing. Keep doing you girl and don’t be afraid to shut down convos with people like her and tell them it’s not their business

having an invisible disability is the worst cuz people think they can be intrusive and ask questions cuz they don't believe someone young like you can be that sick and it's bullshit I'm heavy set and get looks all the time when I use a scooter at the store as if I'm just being lazy when I actually a bad back and arthritis so walking around the store can be very hard for me
