Your story is so similar to mine, and I'm thankful you shared this perspective. My parents are in their 80s now. My sister passed away suddenly three years ago, so all that remains is me and my brother, who is also deeply enmeshed in evangelism. Instead of allowing this to lead me into despair (after my own journey of deconstructing conservstism), it has become clear to all of us that our love for each other overpowers our individual beliefs. I'm not ever going to convince them to change. They're not ever going to convince me to come back. I often get the "we feel like we did something wrong to make you turn away from our faith: talk, but mostly we focus on how much we care about each other. They live in PA and I live in NH so we also don't get to see each other often. Which is nice because when we DO see each other, it's all about the catching up and not at all political or religious. I do t have that much time left with them, and this became super evident when I lost my younger sister. The peace I feel about this is incredible. I believe in and love Jesus. I'm also a liberal with a queen kid who is active in politics. Jesus wouls want me to just love them, and them to love me. So that's where our relationship sits.

Ew! Sis, we’re most certainly not blaming ourselves for being indoctrinated from the moment we took our FIRST BREATH, and/or shouldering primary responsibility for things we might have done under cult influence, are we? No. No we’re not. We do the best we can going forward. I left home at 17, and was basically no contact until I was 25ish. The reconciliation was at my then-wife’s urging, and was only a tiny bit fraught until we found our new equilibrium… We just didn’t talk about religion for two decades😂
