@aurorasadventurez: “Every German Shepherd owner’s worst nightmare…” Your dog is on a leash. You’re being responsible. Then someone else’s off-leash dog runs straight toward you. It’s not always about whether their dog is friendly. It’s about respecting space, safety, and control. Off-leash dogs aren’t everyone’s worst fear… until they are. Have you had a offleash dog run up to you , love to hear your story !

100%. especially because my puppy is not just friendly, he’s hyper social, isn’t good at reading dogs body language, little to no manners when interacting with other dogs, and gets far too aroused when interacting and is extremely intense. this is being addressed through training, with professional input and appropriate socialisation, however it has to be noted that the amount of irresponsible dog owners is a nightmare. it makes it impossible often to have good sessions and stress-free walks because i’m more hyper-vigilant than my extremely hyper-vigilant breed lol

Yes, so many times. It’d be one thing if those dogs are capable of being recalled by their owners but often they’re not! So suddenly I’m having to put myself between an off-leash dog and my leashed GSD and try and keep distance. My dog is reactive but it’s very manageable with some distance. When that ‘friendly’ dog however runs barking aggressively at mine, she’s unsurprisingly trying to defend herself and I’ve suddenly got two dogs to control.

My American Bulldog always perceived it as a threat when an off leash dog ran towards us. He would puff out his chest and wait for the worst. Thankfully nothing violent ever came of it.

I was walking my gsd, who had a love for everyone but also extreme fear. We ran into mu neighbour with her huskie mix. We started chatting, and her dog decided to make bad choices. I had to step in which taught my poor sweet girl mama has your back. Also , that dog sure listens to me now. And Daisy has become a confident girl. No lasting damage and she adores me.

I was walking in a area of my town that is not an off leash area for dogs. I was walking my dog on leash and had my baby in a back pack carrier on my back. A lady approached with her dog off leash and he started barking and circling us, I told her to put her dog in a leash and she whipped me with her dogs leash that was in her hand. I called the police.

Yes! My GSD is friendly, but reactive if boundaries aren’t respected. It’s nails on a chalkboard when I hear “it’s ok. My dog is friendly.” Great for them, but if there’s an altercation because my dog reacted, my dog gets blamed.

My dog is fear aggressive - it's a nightmare walking him near off leash dogs. The owners shout it's ok, he/she's friendly. That's fine - my dog is now snarling in terror 😢

My GSD is amazing, but he’s reactive. I only walk him in quiet forest trails. Sometimes I let him off leash, but the moment I see someone approaching, I leash him immediately. If someone is coming toward us with an off-leash dog, I stop walking and position myself in front of my dog. Most people understand the message and either choose another path or leash their dog. Sometimes, though, there’s a confrontation because the off-leash dog doesn’t respond to its owner, or the owner is too busy looking at their phone. That’s on them. More often than not, they end up apologizing afterward, so I guess our body language is pretty clear 😁

My shepherd is very reactive to other dogs in her space. I have to be so intentional when we go anywhere.

I threw my dog behind me and stood my ground and my gsd was like, mom why you do that, I had it. No ma’am you didn’t, and it’s my job to protect you.

happened to me today...my 4 month old is reactive and I've been working really hard at slow socialising but so many people have no control over their dog it's making it even harder. so frustrating, especially when they call out it's ok they're friendly...all while not having recall 🤬

Off leash dog with poor recall ran up to my dog, we got lucky and the dog was friendly and my German Shepard is as well. Got less lucky with my childhood chihuahua. He got chased by off leash dog TWICE. Fortunately no serious damage aside from having a tuft of white fur yanked out once, but my poor baby was so scared he refused to walk by the same house where the dog went after him and I was a kid and it scared me as well. I remember shoving him in my sweater and running from another dog in our neighbourhood when I was walking him on my own.

The number of times I’ve had to scream “NO NOT FRIENDLY” are some of the most anxiety inducing memories I have with our boy. He’s reactive, we mind our distance and always have him on leash. I always felt so bad screaming, it scared him, but I needed other people to call off their dogs

My anxious dog was on a leash at a park. We were walking toward the parking lot to leave when I heard a woman yell to me from where we were headed, “can he say hello?” And i saw her very large dog barreling toward us. I screamed, “no!” But it was too late. The dog was in my dog’s space and circling us. My dog was very patient but clearly uncomfortable. The owner of this dog took her time reaching us and did not try to call her dog back. Only when she reached her dog did she say, “leave it.” I wanted to scream at her that it was a kittle late for that! I was infuriated. Her dog was very friendly but clearly not trained and she is someone who thinks everyone is as happy to be with her dog as she is. Her behavior puts her own dog in danger and other people and dogs as well.

We had an off leash GSD run up to us twice and the dog had no recall. It was stressful and not a fun time, thankfully no one was hurt

One of My first memories was My Mother and I being bitten by a German Shepherd! Years later on a bike ride with Mom a St Bernard bit Her badly on the thigh! They claimed to have put the dog down but I suspect they just moved it to some relatives house or something!
