After I told this lady from the church that the youth pastor touched me inappropriately, I was told “as a victim myself, he didn’t rape you. So at least it’s not that bad” and I’ve struggled with that my entire life since. Was I really SA if he didn’t insert anything? Was anything done wrong to me if his member wasn’t in me? It took a long time , and I still have moments , to consider myself a survivor and felt like I had a right to mourn that loss of consent to my body

I’m having a really hard time understanding this…. The only thing that comes to my mind is “As a victim, (insert what they had to deal with or relating to another persons story)”. I don’t know if that’s seen as malicious or smt, but I’ve tried rereading it many times and I still don’t get it

honestly i get it. obv depends on context but a lot of people will use “as a victim” to discredit someone elses opinion on a relevant topic- which assumes the other persons opinion isnt existing as a victim but rather as a 3rd party who has no authority on the topic. It implies that victimhood grants authority and its a power play of who has the highest authority or who holds the most victimhood

I just see it as a way of relating, I get how people might think it’s back handed though but most people mean no harm by saying it, they just want the other person to know that they understand because they’ve been through similar 🩷
