@tabbysiegfried: After getting Syrena back to the rehabilitation center, we finally had a chance to figure out what was really going on. At first glance, the most obvious thing was the barnacles. She was absolutely covered in them. A lot of people assume the barnacles are the problem—but they’re usually a symptom. Healthy sea turtles spend their days swimming, diving, and migrating. And only resting in short time frames. That constant movement naturally limits how many barnacles can attach and grow. When a turtle becomes too weak to swim normally, barnacles can begin to accumulate, sometimes covering large portions of the shell and skin. It’s often a sign that the turtle has been sick for quite some time. Syrena was also severely emaciated, which told us she hadn’t been eating for a while. Then her bloodwork came back. Her packed cell volume (PCV)—the percentage of blood made up of red blood cells—was only 10%. In sea turtles, red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. A PCV that low indicates severe anemia, meaning her body had very little capacity to deliver oxygen to her tissues and organs. It’s a life-threatening finding and helps explain why she was so weak. At that moment, we knew this wasn’t going to be a quick recovery. The rescue was only the beginning.
