If your first reaction to feedback from your partner is “nothing I do is ever good enough,” here’s another way to see it. Feedback isn’t the enemy of love. It’s how love grows up. In a real partnership, both people need room to say “that hurt me” or “this isn’t working for me.” That’s not an attack. That’s someone trusting you enough to be honest. But if you grew up being harshly criticized, or learned that needing reassurance made you weak, your nervous system can hear feedback through that old wound. “I want to feel closer to you” gets translated into “you’re failing, you’re under attack.” So you defend. And that reaction makes sense, it’s protection. But it pushes away the very person trying to reach you. And when a partner keeps hearing they’re too much or too critical just for naming a feeling, it slowly wears them down until honesty stops feeling safe. If this sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means there’s a skill to build: staying regulated when feedback lands, and learning to hear “I want more of you” inside what first sounds like “you’re not enough.” Because feedback is how trust is built, and how two people grow together instead of apart. Does feedback sometimes land as an attack for you? 💛 This information is for psychoeducational purposes only and not to be misconstrued as therapy💗💗💗💗 #CouplesTherapy #RelationshipAdvice #AvoidantAttachment #Defensiveness #Communication
