To give monitoring "spirits" little to no access to you. My major reason was someone getting extremely upset that I blue ticked them when in honesty I read the message but got interrupted so I couldn't respond in a timely manner 😞

Status views are off because I don’t want to keep checking who has viewed my status-I know I’d keep checking if I left it on. Read receipts off cause I don’t want to feel pressured to reply and I don’t want to keep checking if someone has read my message to them. I will know they’ve read it when they reply.

The disappearing messages feature does not make sense to me…I will block and delete a person because of that, because clearly our chats are insignificant.

In the days of Mxit we were able to "logout" and people understood that for those hours you weren't online that you were unavailable. In a post-Mxit era this isn't the case. WhatsApp has also now been integrated into professional spaces because emails aren't intrusive enough. Doing all things allows people an opportunity to at least appear offline, no read receipts or double ticks means that we can ignore things without the constant expectation to respond to everything immediately. Doing some of those things also means I don't have to juggle two phones or accounts just so that I can freely communicate with friends or family.

I turned off my read receipt 2 years ago and you know what ,peace .i con ignore people in peace and I can respond at my pace .i hardly check people s status and don’t care to know who viewed mine

@Charlo: My reason is mental peace and self preservation because I’m an over thinker and I have had to create boundaries. I don’t want the expectations that comes with seeing who has viewed my status or letting others know I’ve viewed theirs. Too often, people use their status to communicate important things and then assume everyone who saw it knows what they’re going through. I believe that if something is important, it should be communicated directly. So, turning off my read receipts and limiting what I can see isn’t about being secretive or avoiding people. It’s about protecting my peace and setting healthy boundaries. It’s an act of self-preservation more than anything else. When it comes to photos I just don’t care to change my profile pics. I do however hate when people turn on disappearing messages, I don’t get it but maybe they have reasons like I do so I would say everyone has a preference I guess
