@astro.physik0: Neptune — The Blue Ice Giant Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System. Located about 4.5 billion kilometers from Earth, it is an ice giant with a deep blue appearance caused by methane in its atmosphere, which absorbs red light and reflects more blue wavelengths. Neptune is a huge planet, with a diameter of about 49,500 km, almost four times larger than Earth. It has a mass about 17 times greater than our planet and a powerful gravitational acceleration of 11.15 m/s², slightly stronger than Earth's 9.81 m/s². For example, a person with a mass of 70 kg would have a weight of about 686 N on Earth and around 781 N on Neptune. In a more intuitive way, it would feel as if that person weighed around 79.5 kg on Earth, because Neptune's gravity would make their body feel heavier. However, their actual mass would still remain 70 kg. Neptune has some of the fastest winds ever measured in the Solar System, reaching speeds of more than 2,000 km/h. Its atmosphere is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium, with methane giving it its characteristic blue color. The planet has a complex ring system and 14 known moons, the largest being Triton. Triton is especially fascinating because it has geysers of nitrogen, a frozen surface, and likely originated from the Kuiper Belt before being captured by Neptune's gravity. Neptune was discovered in 1846 thanks to mathematical predictions based on irregularities in Uranus' orbit. It remains one of the least explored planets, with only one spacecraft, Voyager 2, having visited it in 1989. With its extreme winds, deep blue atmosphere, powerful gravity, and mysterious interior, Neptune remains one of the most fascinating worlds in the Solar System. #neptune #icegiant #solarsystem #astronomie #universe
