Killing offenders makes them more likely to kill their victims to avoid getting caught. A harsher punishment doesn't change offense rates, they just get sneakier about it and remove all the witnesses.

highly recommend the book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson!! He is a death row attorney and talks about some of his clients, all of which were either innocent, severely mentally ill, or children when sentenced. He highlights the racial discrepancies in the criminal justice system and makes a very strong case against the death penalty.

HARD AGREE! When a government has the power to impose the death penalty on any individual, it is impossible for that not to be taken advantage of. This does not diminish the likelyhood of these crimes happening either- capital punishment only benefits the people who have the power to excersize it.

Plus death penalty is for some psychological profiles a motive to commit a crime, as it represents a recognition of what they have done and can for some be the ultimate perverse enjoyment

Also marginal deterrence is real! If an offender knows they will already face the death penalty for an offense like SA, the risk of them murdering their only witness is much higher.

And also, I May be wrong but it's been proven that it's not a deterrent? Like, I'm not 100% sure but I remember reading that the argument "kill one criminal so people learn the lesson and don't do the crime" is wrong and people still do the crime even of they risk the death penalty

I had to tackle this when I started getting into law, one thing I had to learn was “you’re not defending a murder you’re defending their rights as laid out in the constitution.” Because if they can just be strip of their rights without due process then anyone rights can be stripped. And guess what NOT EVERY ACCUSED IS GUILTY!!! You can’t just leave it to the state.

yesyesyes, it’s literally the same case with abortion too. whether you as an individual want one or not, the point of pro choice is that the government should not be able to make that choice FOR YOU. the government should not have control over certain things.

there are also studies into how the jury vote on trials where death penalty is an option, and they are more likely to say not guilty because they dont want that on their conscience/dont support the death penalty/etc.

I was for the death penalty for crimes with a lot of evidence etc. and for violent crimes from people in which rehabilitation wouldn't work eg psychopaths. However, someone said to me that the death penalty can make criminals not keep victims alive if they know they would get the death penalty for what they've done so it's made me so unsure again
