The epidemic originated in Brazil in the 1990s but has since crossed borders very fast. News alerts confirm it has sickened thousands of cats and infected over 11,000 humans across South America, recently hitting Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay and experts warn it’s only a matter of time until it reaches the US. The disease has a 100% fatality rate in cats as it moves into their respiratory system. Symptoms in Cats: Deep, crusty sores that do not heal, mostly on the nose, ears, and face. Constant sneezing, noisy breathing, and thick nasal discharge. Swollen glands extreme tiredness and weight loss. Symptoms in Humans: Small, painless red or purple nodules at the scratch or bite site. Ulcers that break open, ooze, and refuse to heal. New sores that pop up in a line moving up the arm or leg. Eye infection, coughing, joint pain, severe headaches.
