He went on to win the Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, and Critics' Choice for the role. Nolan shot key sequences on 70mm IMAX film, a first for a studio movie at that scale, and one of only four IMAX cameras in existence at the time was destroyed filming the SWAT van chase. The film went on to gross over a billion dollars worldwide and is still cited as the movie that made the Academy add more Best Picture slots the following year.
