The primary Argentine president most famously associated with pushing blanqueamiento (the state-sponsored "whitening" of the population) was Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who served as president from 1868 to 1874. Sarmiento, along with the prominent political theorist Juan Bautista Alberdi (the main architect of the 1853 Constitution), heavily operated under pseudoscientific racial theories of the 19th century. They believed that for Argentina to become a modernized, civilized "Western" nation, it needed to dilute its Black and Indigenous populations. To accomplish this, Sarmiento and his contemporaries used two main strategies: Mass European Immigration: They aggressively promoted and subsidized the immigration of millions of Western Europeans (primarily from Italy and Spain) to explicitly "correct" the demographics of the country. Cultural and Physical Erasure: Non-white populations were disproportionately used as frontline soldiers (or "cannon fodder") in conflicts like the War of the Triple Alliance, and were left to bear the brunt of devastating yellow fever and cholera outbreaks in neglected neighborhoods. While several leaders of that era contributed to this state-led initiative, Sarmiento is universally recognized as its most vocal presidential champion.
