I wanted to make sure I wasn’t comparing a cheap nonrefundable rate on one site against a flexible rate somewhere else. Here’s how they ranked from most expensive to least expensive: Hertz Direct: $613.68  Alamo Direct: $584.42  Budget Direct: $573.55  Priceline: $500  Expedia: $446  Costco Travel: $422.47  Sam’s Club Travel: $421 Sam’s Club had the lowest sticker price, but Costco was only $1.47 more and included an additional driver at no extra charge. That’s important because the cheapest option isn’t always the best value once you start looking at what’s actually included. For this trip, Costco and Sam’s Club were dramatically cheaper than booking directly with the rental car companies, and the difference between Sam’s Club and Hertz was more than $190. Obviously, rental car prices can change constantly depending on the airport, dates, demand, vehicle class, memberships, and promotions available when you book. This isn’t saying one site will always be cheapest. But my takeaway is simple: if you have a Costco or Sam’s Club membership, check the travel portal before booking your rental car. And when you compare prices, make sure you’re comparing cancellation policies, mileage, additional-driver fees, taxes, and other included benefits—not just the number you see at the top of the screen.
