@creativeflairhq: Here's something almost no artist knows: there's a huge pot of money set aside, by law in a lot of places, specifically to pay artists to make art for public spaces. And most never even look for it. It's called public art, and it's a lot bigger than murals. Paintings, sculptures, illustrations, photography, even art on park benches and trail signs, in schools, hospitals, libraries, parks and new developments. Thousands of commissions every year, for artists at every level, including complete beginners. Where the money comes from: loads of places have a 'percent for art' scheme, where around 1% of the budget of every big construction project has to be spent on art. On a big build, that's serious money. How to actually get it: Search 'percent for art' or 'public art commission' plus your city, and check your local arts council. That's where they're listed. They usually want a short proposal, so start with smaller, local ones to build a track record. A lot of programmes reserve most of their commissions for local artists. Don't count yourself out on scale. Councils commission benches, utility boxes and small murals, not just giant sculptures. Everyone starts somewhere. A public commission pays you properly, puts your work in front of a whole community, and gives you a CV line that changes everything. Most artists just never knew the money was there. Send this to an artist who deserves to get paid for their work. #ArtistOpportunities #EmergingArtist #PublicArt #ArtCareer #CreativeFlair

There’s also a huge budget that most Community Colleges have for “events and entertainment” that they literally have to spend or else it gets cut. Meaning the only people you have to convince is a group of college students to support your cause or plan. I know this for a fact cause I use to be the president of one ☝🏾

Love to hear your opinion about the darker art niche. Not a lot of businesses want to make their clients uneasy, retail reproductions are a miss too. I feel like prints & and original are the main highlight for niche work that makes the average person uneasy. And what of ACOS and other income streams? What works for niche dark surrealist work?

It’s true! Neither my agent more my publisher told me about all these grants for trad authors around — they didn’t even mention the ones they had already had their other authors win, so they knew! But I got two which more than doubled my pre-publication finances.

In any city there are about half a dozen artists getting ALL of these commissions so definitely worth going for it if you do the type of work they are looking for.
