it looks disgusting, but it's mostly minerals and some sediment, and the water is drawn out the top of the heater, not the bottom. the extreme heat of the water makes bacteria growth unlikely.

the only thing inside of the tank would be getting there from the cold water coming in. so you would be getting the same thing no matter what. it's just the build up of those minerals that have been sitting on the bottom getting stirred up from draining the tank from the bottom

In Florida they put cross over valves from hot to cold to circulate the water and don’t have a problem with it

The no drinking from the hot water doesn’t apply to tankless so I can turn the temperature up and use it to make hot tea without having to boil water on the stove.
