What if a first date stopped being a test of how well you can follow social rules—and became an experience designed so you could actually connect? If you are autistic, meeting someone new may already mean thinking about eye contact, conversation, being misunderstood, looking “weird,” and possibly explaining autism to a stranger. Add makeup, uncomfortable clothes, an unfamiliar restaurant, and imaginary dating rules, and you can spend the entire date managing the setting instead of noticing whether you even like the person. Accommodating yourself might mean: Telling your date you are autistic. Choosing a familiar, pre-planned walk. Wearing clothes that feel comfortable. Moving or stretching beforehand. Removing uncertainty so you can focus on connection. That is not avoiding dating. The purpose of a date is not to prove that you can perform neurotypical romance correctly. It is to discover whether you feel safe, respected, curious, and comfortable with another person. Meeting people may still be a lot. Accommodations do not erase autistic anxiety or make socializing effortless. They create more room for you to be present as yourself. Before your next date, try asking: Which parts help me connect—and which are only performance? What could I change so my body feels safer? What would help me focus on the person instead of surviving the setting? You can be happy, successful, desirable, and fully autistic. You are allowed to need predictability. You are allowed to date differently. Context note: This is Annika-first content—a window into one autistic and ADHD life, not a definition of autism or ADHD. I am white, relatively low support needs, and not physically disabled. My perspective is not universal, and what works for me may not work for you. Please take what resonates and make room for experiences different from mine. #annikaunmasked #autism #dating #unmasking #latediagnosedautistic
