🎗️ THE MEDICATION AFTER ER+/PR+ BREAST CANCER CAN BE HARD… BUT WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT? After surgery, chemo or radiation, many of us with ER+/PR-positive breast cancer are told: “Now you need endocrine therapy.” Tamoxifen. Anastrozole. Letrozole. Exemestane. Sometimes ovarian suppression. And sometimes we think: “The cancer is gone. Why do I still need this?” Because ER+/PR+ breast cancer uses hormone signaling—especially estrogen signaling—to help cancer cells grow. Endocrine therapy blocks estrogen’s effects or lowers estrogen levels, helping reduce the risk of the cancer returning. 💊 BUT THE SIDE EFFECTS CAN BE REAL. Depending on the medication, people may experience: 🔥 Hot flashes & night sweats 😴 Fatigue or sleep problems 🦴 Joint, muscle or bone pain 🌸 Vaginal dryness or sexual changes 😔 Mood changes 💇 Hair thinning 🦴 Bone loss with aromatase inhibitors Tamoxifen can also rarely cause serious blood clots, while aromatase inhibitors can contribute to bone thinning and fractures. And when you’re supposed to be getting your life back after cancer, these side effects can make you wonder: “Is this medication really worth it?” ❤️ WHY DO WE KEEP TAKING IT? Because this isn’t simply another pill. For hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer, endocrine therapy taken after surgery is specifically intended to lower the risk of a new breast cancer, recurrence and death from breast cancer. In long-term randomized studies, about 5 years of tamoxifen substantially reduced recurrence in women with ER-positive early breast cancer, with benefits continuing years after treatment ended. It cannot guarantee cancer will never return. But we’re taking it to give ourselves the best chance we can of keeping our recurrence risk as low as possible. 🤍 AND IF THE SIDE EFFECTS BECOME TOO MUCH… Tell your oncologist. You don’t necessarily have to suffer silently. Depending on your situation, your doctor may be able to help manage the symptoms or consider a different endocrine therapy. Ask: “What is MY recurrence risk?” “How much is this medication lowering MY risk?” “What can we do about these side effects?” Because quality of life matters too. 🎗️ We aren’t taking endocrine therapy because we’re guaranteed to have cancer hiding somewhere.
