idk about the novel, but in the manhwa he was possessed by the ancestors the whole time, he and claude used to have good relationships as brothers but changed after he was possessed. he actually did love her and was also instinctively protecting Jeanette even when he was possessed. the only reason he is bad before being possessed was because he is madly in love with claude fiancee and took her for himself

but that wasn't him right it was the ancestor guy's influence. actually he's somehow more redeemable then Claude imo. that guy just got depressed and voluntarily used black magic on himself to forget, failed at that then got headaches from his own failure, turned to the "solution" and abandoned the love child of his so called "love of his life"
