Even ignoring history/racism, Argentina are just such a hateable team. They are the best at all the unethical aspects of the game: diving, screaming at the ref, winding up opponents. That just makes it so much easier to hate them without even mentioning their history and fans

i think u failed to mention that many ppl aren’t going off governments but rather the players themselves. argentina won the wc in 2022 and the first thing they did was a racist livestream.

I completely agree with this point. However, I feel like people are forgetting that Argentina specifically had their legacy fixed by the World Cup. When most people think of Argentina, they don’t think of the genocide they committed against blacks in their country. They think of Messi. They sports fixed their image. On top of that, there’s videos online showcasing Argentinian players a racist chant after they won Copa America in 2024 I believe against the French team which they had nothing to do w the tournament. Of course there are many other countries w a racist past, but teams like England, USA, Belgium, etc all have black players and don’t display inherent racism. Argentinas racist is actively being hidden due to their victories in the World Cup.

That’s why I like to support the teams based off the actual players not the countries. The Argentina team is on camera singing racist chants, while Spain has plenty of players I already like. Easy choice

I think this greatly overlooks the importance of the apparent morals of the players currently on the teams and current political perceptions (regardless of accuracy). Like I’m not sure I have heard of a single positive moral or ethical stance that a current Argentinian player has taken/done. I have heard the racist songs. I have heard the allegations of sexual assault against two players. I have seen the Zionist pictures and loud silence from one of the most influential humans on the face of the earth as children are blown up while wearing his kit. I think in a lot of cases the more the players and team seem to align with the public perception of what their government stands for, the less grace they are given. However, I do think the US is unique in this situation and so there’s definitely more contributing to the perception of the US team by the greater public (American and international) than other teams playing.

please just look up argentinian history, a few years before we stopped being a Spanish colony (1815) we had libertad de vientres (1813) which meant that kids born from slaves were free, in 1853 we abolished slavery, we never had segregation, an afrodescendant woman (Maria de los Remedios del Valle) is called "madre de la patria" here, an afro indigenous man (Juan Bautista Cabral) is remembered as "Soldado Heroico" because he gave up his life to save San Martín in the San Lorenzo war. While it's true that we have racism and xenophobia as every other country does, and our racism isn't as noticeable as the United States' racism, ask any black person who lives here or even just traveled here, they've been victims of racism but I've seen people who say that there's more positive experiences than negative. Also, we've always accepted immigrants and treated them as our own I'm sorry for ranting but I just need to defend my own country, which I love and appreciate, but I will always acknowledge its flaws. And sorry if there are parts you can't understand, clearly English isn't my first language, correct anything you'd like but give sources, I'll read them and give you my opinion, thx!
