Fun fact: nylon stockings also work if you’re building on a budget.

That's not lego anymore. That's just casual modelmaking but more expensive.

please try white pieces, they'll look so good. also use some green or something to darken some spots of the water to add depth.

I think your best bet for the substructure would be lots of small semi curved ridges

Mars Multifarious :
Rather than one big carpet, break it up into separate nets. This will simulate rough seas better. You can fill in the gaps with white "foam" and then it would be pretty great!

Do the clothes feel weighty?
A Lego weighted blanket would be kinda cool 😁

Geniouenly I would look into the work of the comic artist Lucy Bellwood. I don’t fully remember of the top if my head if she ever did a guide on tall ships, but she has drawn a ton of them (and worked on some). I think it would be a great reference for a simplified but grounded in reality for the ship.

Similar concept in how people are making flexible 3d prints, adding a mesh in the middle of the print.

Okay okay, hear me out. Instead of buying hundreds of what I expect to be overly expensive pre-cut pieces of web/mesh. Why not just go buy one big sheet or roll, and cut accordingly. Unless there's underlying elitism in only using proper branded stuff, I see no sensible reason not to do so. And yes, ofc you can buy the same or similar material.
