Why is there sales tax on something that was already taxed. That’s the real question

That make no sense. Not every car is worth its “book value”. 2026 toyota that’s missing an engine is not $20K

this is 100% based on which state you live in, period. the majority of states is based on SALE price, but if it looks suspiciously low they can have it appraised and tax you based on that valuation. so if its value is $20k and you pay $15k, they wont really care. but if its $5k and you paid $100, they will almost guarunteed investigate and appraise it first. please dont make videos spreading misinformation. i love your videos but this is 100% misinformation.

Pay :
Tax on used items is theft in my opinion. sales tax was already paid on it when it was bought new. Texas will charge you whichever is more, tax on the book value or tax on whatever you paid (so convenient right?). So you bought a car with a bad engine or a car with body damage you plan on fixing? go get it appraised at a dealership and make sure you get the appraisal in writing. Take that to the dmv and they'll tax you on that value. If the taxes are only like 300 bucks you might as well just pay them though because you're required to pay your appraiser if you go this route. a few years ago I bought an 5th Gen Camaro that the owner hit a dog and the front end was all messed up. DMV said it was worth 12000, appraisal said it was worth 2. made sense to go this route.

GeneralMadMax1 :
So if you buy a car and technically the car is worth $10,000 but the engine is blown…. wouldn’t the value of the car be far less than what the book value would be

Nope but bill of sale says $100.00 and tell them the engine was blown and had to be replaced and the seller did not want it in their yard anymore.

sales tax on a used vehicle is a scam. the original owner already paid the sales tax to the dealership.

What kills me is the car was taxed the first time it was sold, and gets taxed at book value each time it gets sold
