Oh look, another person totally missing the point. I’m gonna break this up into multiple comments to make it easier. Firstly, the original video wasn’t about the 3 types of blah blah blah. Nathan was saying, (and had said in previous posts), that self taught people are trash, and apprenticeships were the only way to go to become a “real” tattoo artist. So by Nathan’s own words, Jeffery, it doesn’t matter how good you are, you’re not a real artist in Nathan’s eyes, you’re just a scratcher.

I've seen cases where self taught artists come into a shop and the shop owner/mentors purposely give them false information and hold them back in an effort to keep them from progressing so that they could keep making money off of them. mentor/apprenticeships can be predatory too

I try to tell people this all the time. I’m only 4 years in teaching myself and I want a mentor SO BADLY to push and guide me further. I don’t recommend not having an apprenticeship. It sucks.

Theres a school near me that hires their graduates to start teaching so they can bring more students in, because the state limits the amount of students per teacher. Oregon has SO many schools, cuz you have to go to one to get licensed, and out of all the schools I’ve seen, only one has instructor who is good enough to be teaching

100% truth!!! im a self taught artist and next month will be 20 years licensed. fuck i learned so much when I got a chance in a shop and the guys around me who had been tattooing alot longer I learned soo much from them and they broke me lf so much bad habits I had taught myself!! 20 years later and still learning. jack rudy told me this "the day you think you know everything in tattooing pack it up holmes, there is somone else that can teach you more then you think you know.

Even with an apprenticeship it was so hard. Lots of tears and a huge learning curve it was so worth it when u earn it

Second, there was never any mention of timeframe. Some people get better with time, (you’re proof of that), and others, well…blindfold coverups for $100, anyone, (IYKYK)? The point was self taught = bad, apprenticeships = good. Black and white. My point is that it’s NOT black and white. I’ve got work done and seen work done by artists who went through the traditional apprenticeship process and are straight trash. Both you and Nathan have been in the game for a while, so I’m sure you’ve come across a few “artists” who should be anything BUT a tattoo artist. On the flipside, there’s self taught people out there who are great. Yes, it might’ve taken them a little longer to get there, but the fact of the matter is they’re there. Aren’t you proof of that? And that’s my point - it’s not absolutes. Now, the only question is this…are you going to try to move the goalposts like Nathan did to tell me I’m wrong?

Bro same🙌🙌 I'm self taught, couldn't get an apprenticeship... And if I were, I'd be where I'm at now over 10 years ago. Apprenticeships are needed. Not these fake seminars
