my hottest take is that villains can be pure evil, while still having more to their character 🙂↕️especially when interacting w/ other characters who aren't one-dimensional

Ozai was not a complex villain.
He was a generic Saturday morning cartoon villain: "I'm evil just because."

isnt it implied in the comics that Ozai is abusive towards Ursa and Zuko? Id imagine, considering how casually he screams at them. like in the scene where Ozai reads Ursa's letter saying Zuko isnt his, he demands Ursa's servants to leave and starts screaming at her before they even reach the door. it seems pretty in character for him, considering he does this to Zuko during the eclipse. he demands his servants leave, but in this instance he is calm and isnt already yelling before they're gone. even so, these actions ARE in character for him. Another thing ive noticed in the comics so far is Ozai's tendency to mask his cruelty with "but I am a merciful man." it irked me every time he said it 💔💔

Most of the time in the search, we see Ozai behind closed doors, who he really is. A savagely evil man who only wants power. He comes of cool and composed in public because he’s a manipulator like you said. But when he’s left alone with those he views as inferior like Ursa and Zuko, he either lashes out at them or demeans them, which we do see in the show.
