@kinacptsdtherapist: I recently published a workbook called the felt sense attachment workbook. It’s written to support people in doing their own deep attachment healing, and for therapists to support their work with clients. Find it on my website kinawolfensteintraining.com
I didn’t call it emotional neglect until I saw one of your videos for the first time a few months ago. I’ve been in therapy for 10 years. Multiple diagnosis. This was the first time naming it felt like understanding.

Are you able to touch on how this is compounded with neurodiversity? Because a lot of therapists don’t know what to do with patients like me - amazing at intellectualizing the experience but not quite able to process the emotional aspect

and then that feeling of being perpetually misunderstood gets compounded every time i try therapy again bc the therapist ALSO doesn’t seem interested or invested in my inner experience and wants me to be able to process/heal in a way and at a pace that im not capable of. and then they get visibly frustrated with me for not getting better on their desired timeline. so then i quit bc im clearly a burden on them and leave feeling once again like im too fucked up even for therapists. i recognize that therapists have their own limitations too, but it’s hard not to feel hopeless after having gone through this so many times

I explicitly TOLD one of my last therapists, who insisted on CBT, that asking me to be different was essentially reinforcing my wound/belief that something is inherently wrong with me. I am not sure that ever clicked for her. I even said the words “possible emotional neglect” but she sort of brushed over it. I’m not sure how much training therapists get on identifying this.

What if I know of my neglect, recognize and name it, know how it affects me, what now

What type of therapy do you recommend for someone who was emotionally neglected?

It also sneaks below the radar for the individual because it doesn’t always look like “neglect” insomuch as other adults around when we were children didn’t clock the neglect. I’m not sure how often it happens at the hands of a covert narcissist caregiver. That’s the case for me. I only started to see the deficit of connection when I started listening to books about the experience of daughters raised by narcissistic mothers. That was the huge unlock for me.

I didn’t realize I was emotionally neglected in my childhood until a few weeks ago. I’m 32. Thank god for my therapist pointing it out. Took 5 years with her to get there

I've been in therapy consistently for five years, and only in the past few months did I realise this.

Me: sometimes I whish something traumatic had happened to me in the past so that I had a reason for feeling like shit now
My therapist: if there was one huge thing in your past, you'd have ptsd. You are depressed because a lot of small things had happened to you for a long time in the past

The notion that my parents would even consider that I had an inner world is sadly inconceivable.

Yes, a Traumatic event happened. But then not being supported afterwards is even MORE trauma. And yes, it's invisible even to the victim because it's about what didn't happen.

My parents are good people, they don't understand me and they never once tried to. spending time with them is like being deaf and spending time with people who cannot learn sign language— it's like I'm always doing all of the work and in the end my needs are not met

I would say that 99%+ of us don't even know what emotional neglect is and that it happened to us. how many times did I tell me therapist that they need to outsmart me cause I'm highly intelligent and can intellectualize everything yet not know how I feel. too many times. it wasn't until I understood what emotional neglect is did I start getting real help

Me in my first therapy session: “My childhood was fine, I wasn’t abused or anything. Maybe just emotionally neglected.” Two years later, after finding your vids: “Called it.”

I unfortunately can manage the emotional neglect but I can’t handle the barrage of scrutiny and harassment for being unwilling to remain codependent to someone I was very much placating when I didn’t know better

I just feel like nobody ever showed up for me. Sure I had a roof over my head. But dad was an alcoholic and mom worked all the time. Now they want me to care for them and I just can’t.

It’s hard to know what feeling alone is cuz when it’s just your MO it doesn’t feel like a lack of something it just feels normal

i took a class called “the social construction of silence” in college and i don’t know if id have been able to recognize the role emotional neglect has played for me without it. it lives in the in-betweens, the silences.

this is where I feel lucky. I was also physically neglected, so obviously emotionally neglected as well, so that it was obvious neglect. I've never felt wrong without knowing why. I feel like not realizing why would be so much harder

it's so hard. I had physical abuse and emotional neglect and didn't recognize the emotional neglect until the parent that was physically abusive passed. but I got ALMOST enough and feel guilty about being upset by that part I did lack.
