@dr.matthew.parker: Let’s rate some old psych treatments! 1) Lobotomies: Started in the 1930s by Dr Moniz. The idea was the disrupt frontal lobe connections in the hope of treating severely ill psychiatric patients. 0/10, obviously 2) Insulin comas: Patients received repeated doses of insulin to induce comas for treating schizophrenia. Nope, 0/10 3) Hydrotherapy: Patients were wrapped in either hot or cold sheets to calm agitation. 2/10. 4) ECT: Yes! The idea with ECT was that inducing therapeutic seizures under anesthesia could help with several psychiatric conditions. This methodology has come a long way, it is now extremely safe, effective, and a fantastic treatment. 9/10. What other types of treatments have you heard about? #MentalHealth #psychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness #medicine #History

I think you should probably add in that early ECT was very harmful and administered to patients who were not informed of the memory side effects. i think ECT is great and can be life changing but you should acknowledge ECT's harmful origins when you're making a whole video about practices back then.

ECT works but the side effects are still brutal. there are much better treatments now. they should be explored before trying ECT.

If effexor didn't help my depression the way it does I would absolutely sign up for ECT. I've tried every drug under the sun and effexor on the highest dose is the only thing that touches my depression.

There were different types of lobotomies and often the only option for severely mentally ill patients prior to antipsychotics. Also, insulin comas would cause seizures which were helpful for both psychosis and depression. We used ECT mostly because it has proven to be the safest way to deliver a seizure in patients.

I don’t mean to ask a polarizing question and if you aren’t able to comment I understand. Do you have any comments or thoughts on Dr. Amen’s recent comments that due to the mental health industry being more and more of a business, that it’s making our entire population worse. Eg. Unnecessary prescribing not based on biological scans of our brains or treating symptoms with unnecessary Rx interventions.

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) was a hugely popular film that greatly accelerated to decline of ECT…by making it synonymous with torture. It took several decades to correct that very wrong idea.

ECT is the only thing that ever helped my mom. Gold standard for treatment-resistant depression. Terrible side-effects but a magical treatment
