“Wait… did that tree just fight back?” 🌿🦁 Meet Sterling, one of our magnificent male lions at Felidae Centre! While making his way over to greet us, Sterling stopped to rub his impressive mane against a small tree branch, something lions naturally do to scratch, leave their scent, and mark their territory. But this time, the branch had other plans! 😅 His thick mane became tangled, and after a few moments of confusion (and a little frustration), Sterling gave one determined tug and ripped the branch free before proudly continuing on his way as if nothing had happened. Moments like these remind us just how powerful these incredible cats are. A male lion’s mane isn’t just for looks, it helps protect the neck during fights, makes the lion appear larger to rivals, and can even influence lionesses when choosing a mate. However, that thick mane can also get caught on branches and bushes as they move through vegetation.
