@wlukfox11: Changes to Wisconsin elections are happening ahead of the Aug. 11 primary. The Wisconsin Elections Commission voted this month to limit voters' ability to spoil their ballots. This means Wisconsin absentee voters who want to change their vote will no longer be able to do so after it's been returned. If you are voting absentee, this decision may impact when you fill out your ballot or how you submit it. For example, if you've already submitted your vote and the candidate you chose drops out of the race, spoiling your ballot and getting a new one is not an option. Shawano County Clerk Raymond Rigsby said ballots can only be spoiled if issues occur like marking two candidates, checking an oval instead of shading it in, or the ballot gets wet. But, simply changing your mind about a candidate after the ballot has been returned won't qualify for a spoiled ballot. Conversation about spoiling ballots began as Democratic gubernatorial candidates Missy Hughes and Sara Rodriguez both recently ended their campaigns after ballots were sent out. Five candidates remain, and it's feasible others could drop out before Aug. 11. The Wisconsin Elections Commission limited ballot spoiling in a vote. In the past, voters were allowed to cancel a returned ballot and request a new one if they wanted to change their vote. Others on the WEC believe mailed-in votes and in person votes should have the same playing field. The only other way an absentee voter can request a new ballot if they've changed their mind, is if the ballot has not yet been mailed. If you're voting by mail, the postal service recommends mailing your ballot back at least seven days before Election Day. You can also bring it to your clerk's office or vote in-person absentee.
