it drives me nuts because Andromeda from The Illiad was described as having darker skin and a lot of Greek historians believed her to be of Ethiopian or Indian origins. King Memnon was also African! there's literally POC in the epic!!

I've seen many of Nolans films and enjoyed none of them. His stories often lack the emotional depth and complexity that draws me to become immersed in the medium. But I completely agree that in an era where media has become more conservative it's hard not to appreciate one of the biggest directors casting people from groups that Hollywood has left behind.

there are a lot of arguments like this where people are bad at identifying the actual argument involved. "is this historically accurate" is a bait question. if you sit down and say "yes actually this is historically accurate" you lose because the argument isnt "were there black people in ancient greece" the argument is "do I have to have black people in my movies" and if you argue that its okay to have black people in THIS movie because its historically viable then you concede that all they need to do is win the "why are there black people here" argument to successfully oust anyone not white from their media

The primary function of racism is to waste the time of anyone trying to deal with racists. dignifying their pretenses by pretending they are worth refuting is just a losing game. It's trying to have an engineering discussion with someone who will look you in the eye and tell you they don't believe 2 + 2 is 4, and they just need you to explain that to them right now because otherwise nothing you're saying makes sense. They simply are not worth wasting time on.

my issue is not with casting, the casting is phenomenal. im upset about the costuming. they had a chance to do REAL Mycenaean armor and clothing and make up. its so colorful and interesting visually, but they went with Helenistic???? borning, uninspired.

2 things: 1. making Helen ethnically stand out is actually a really good and inspired choice to have her have an air of unique beauty (contextually) even if that wasnt what he was going for; and 2. I laughed so much at a tweet that said Elliot transitioned and defeated Nolan's curse of being unable to write women characters because he writes Elliot better in this than he ever bothered to in Inception

Couldn't agree more. Unless they were doing an all-Greek cast, there's no good reason to care about the ethnicities of the characters or the actors. And even if they did cast exclusively ethnic Greeks: Helen could still have been black, because Greece has always had a black population.

Do people not realize the trade routes they are talking about in the movie are trade routes that include Africa. Africa is literally on the other side of the sea. Not to mention the Mediterranean in general is literally near the equator. Plus, they can say Lupita isn't what they would see, but she is literally ethereal. And Lupita played both roles phenomenally. She brought depth to Helen and portrayed the reluctance and shame in the decisions that she made.

I agree with everything you said and I’m always for diverse casting I’m just genuinely surprised after he white washed every character in the Batman trilogy. So I curious if he has changed or if he just didn’t care about those characters and their stories or if he wanted to purposefully create controversy in order to boost sales
