Hey, may I recommend you read John Onians, Semir Zeki, and Eric Kandel on the neuroscience of vision and visuality? I’ve yet to read this literature, even though it’s in my field. I don’t think it can substitute for connoisseurship and historical knowledge, at least in art history, but I’m sure that the visual brain impinges on more than vision itself, both cognitively and in terms of brain mechanics. It would be very valuable to understand how (although what don’t the highest savants already know?). I’m also particularly interested in feedback loops between the brain and other things, such as the heart and externalized forms of order, mnemonic systems, literature, art, music, and networked linkages between these things, which directly shape the mind (as distinct from the brain). It would seem that this “life of forms in art” (Focillon) must however be assimilated to the heart-brain soul of man in order to support and enhance life and not simply remain a kind of alien superstructures presence, an unwelcome ghost of times past.
