As a person with an Avoidant personality in a lot of relationships, but not all. For reasons I don't yet fully understand, I am not avoidant at all in about 5% of relationships, but about 95% I am very avoidant. For me personally, as I move through my healing journey I have discovered that I desire connection but not necessarily the closeness that comes with it. I become your bestie really quickly or make men feel really important but once the other person wants or needs me too much I start to feel overwhelmed, smothered or feel the need to back way off. A thing I have been working on is trying to be more open and transparent with the other person when these feelings come up. It seems to help on both sides of the relationship.

avoidance comes from the fear of facing something or someone all the way until you can honor their or your own sovereignty, which would lead to detachment. also, it could be that you artificially designed postponing "facing" the truth, because deep inside you you know these people aren't for you or you're not for them, and you're playing "safe " to just avoid the withdrawal from the exciting pretend play where everything seems so adventurous and promising

it's the fact that they are potentially unattainable at some point and you can never fully hold them, they are always one foot out the door. you just need them to let you lock the door so you can feel safe and they are always standing by it wondering when the bus is coming. it's frustrating.

Do you think it's similar to gambling? It's the avoidance of certainty (which feels claustrophobic), so keeping options open, instead of finalizing them is akin to opportunities that are freeing, rather than chaotic, whereas certainty is chemically not rewarding (no dopamine), and limiting in its constriction, and daily repetitive nature.

“They have nothing else to offer me so the avoidance/ intermittent reinforcement was making them seem more awesome than they were” that’s an extremely important line!

I was today years old when I realized I’m fearful avoidant… I relate to so much of what you’re describing. The avoidance is a protest behavior and a deactivation strategy for me. If I’m not dating an avoidant I’m more secure (sometimes still anxious). It’s interesting as I heal my attachment, I can still see myself swinging between secure, anxious and avoidant, but the swings have gotten less intense by not chasing and focusing on providing my own nervous system regulation and safety.

Im always attracted to avoidants. I lean mostly anxious attached due to my core belief that I must earn love, but ill lean avoidant if I havent worked for love or their feelings are too strong too early and ill shut down or disappear

This is such an eye opener. I really connected with this. Thank you. I had no clue what avoidant behavior truly meant.

She was controlling and often angry with me. I loved our beginning. It was magic. The more she flipped to intense the more I withdrew. That triggered her more which triggered me too. I still love her (maybe it’s limerance?) and she’s moved on. I’m now the anxious one pressing her. It feels awful
