“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” Mark Twain

THIS! You articulated why I marched to desegregate my own elementary, listened to my Freedom Rider parents, walked with the ERA, FLOC, AIM, ActUP, BLM, No Kings, served through 8 deployments… “love something that you refuse to lie about”. To hold it honestly. My European Ancestor came here in 1747 and married a woman whose people had been here for 25,000 years. I owe them. I owe my descendants. Not to serve them all on a platter. But to at least give all I am and can to try to give them the best as this era allows. So their improvements can focus forward.

This made me tear up. There’s always been things I love about my country, but so incredibly disappointed that it’s never lived up to what it could be as a whole. It’s up to us all now. Safe travels and allons-y.

Nothing is perfect. So how can you fully love something if you don’t acknowledge its flaws?

Grateful I got to sit in one of those chairs, in the corner of a little book shop, surrounded by strangers living in a shared reality. Those ordinary ppl are doing some inspiring, extraordinary things. Thank you for bringing us together. Allons-y

Professor, you've opened the eyes of many people who thought we were educated and who thought our hearts were in the right places, and who learned we could do more for our families and our neighbors than we thought possible. We'll find our way much more clearly now. Thank you. This is #GoodTrouble

I agree. Travel and education BENEFITS EVERYONE. Those things enrich life immeasurably. Americans used to know that. We were taught that in our "liberal" educations. We were a much kinder, gentler country back then I really wish MAGA, and those of that ilk could get that kind of education. I do not like (still love) this country very much right now. I long for the good old days.

Are you from Baltimore? Because only people from Baltimore are allowed to pronounce it “Baltimer!” Love your work!

I wish you made it out to the Midwest. Kansas City would have been a good stop, or somewhere that has some history behind bleeding Kansas. It would have been a short drive for me.

very happy to hear that transgender voices were present. I sadly was unable. Even mentioning it means a lot.

for what little it may be worth, pretty much every time I talk to my 70-year-old dad these days, at some point in the conversation he shakes his head and says something like "Actual history is so different from what I was taught in school." I can't help but wonder how many other people are experiencing that, largely thanks to accounts like yours.
