The Home Office has awarded a £322,000 contract to build AI facial age-estimation tech, used to check whether asylum seekers claiming to be under 18 are telling the truth. The government says it’s needed to stop adults falsely claiming to be children and diverting support from real minors at risk. But the Home Office’s own immigration inspector has found errors go both ways — real children have been wrongly assessed as adults, and adults as children.
