I'm 45, and here's the running list of things people still judge me for. – That I'm not "settled" the way a number apparently demands. – That I still want things I was supposed to grow out of. – That I dress for myself and not for their comfort. – That I say no to gatherings I don't want to be at. – That I changed my mind, my body, my whole life, on my own schedule instead of theirs. For years, each of those came with a flinch. Because there's an age where the questions stop being curious and start being verdicts. Why aren't you married. Why do you still want that. Why don't you want what you're supposed to want by now, as if 30-something arrived with a script and I'd lost my copy. So I edited. I made my wants smaller. My choices quieter. I built a version of myself designed not to make anyone at the table uneasy. Their comfort was costing me my actual life, and I'd been paying the bill for years without ever seeing the total. Nothing dramatic changed the day it shifted. I didn't burn anything down. I just stopped explaining. Stopped apologizing for a life that's mine to live and no one else's to approve or sign off on. The whispers didn't stop, by the way. That's the part people promise you and it isn't true. The whispers stayed. I just stopped organizing myself around them, stopped arranging my days to soften faces that were never going to be satisfied anyway. Because what I finally understood was this. The judgment was never really about me. It was about people refusing themselves the same freedom, and resenting anyone who took it. ... You don't need the room's permission to stop shrinking. You just have to be willing to be talked about while you do.
